Denzel Washington leads The Equalizer 3 cast, marking his final appearance as vigilante Robert McCall. With Washington reuniting with director Antoine Fuqua, The Equalizer 3 is a high-octane thriller bringing back the franchise’s hyper-violent action and philosophical discourse. As McCall strives to find peace in a quiet Italian town, his attempt at restarting his life gets interrupted by the bosses of the Sicilian Mafia. Washington’s protagonist is forced to revisit his turbulent past as he comes out of retirement to protect his newfound friends.

While Washington obviously returns as the titular protagonist, he is accompanied by a diverse cast that includes several Italian actors and a Tunisian actress. Washington, who has appeared in some of the best Antoine Fuqua movies, including Training Day and the first Equalizer movie, doesn’t just reunite with the action director but also with his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning. The actress had earlier collaborated with the two-time Oscar winner in the 2004 action thriller, which actually shares several similarities with the Equalizer franchise in terms of narrative and themes. This cast reunion is a major reason to create anticipation for the cast of The Equalizer 3.

Denzel Washington As Robert McCall

Dakota Fanning looking sideways in The Equalizer 3

Denzel Washington leads the cast of The Equalizer 3 as Robert McCall, a vigilante who was once a Marine and later a DIA Intelligence officer. Even though he plans to live out the rest of his life in peace in Southern Italy, violent circumstances force him back into action. Comparable to action heroes like John Wick and Taken’s Bryan Mills, McCall is gifted with numerous survival and combat skills. The Equalizer 3 also reveals that he can take down enemies in just a matter of nine seconds, as he even goes on to time himself.

While he is known for his dramatic roles like Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s eponymous biopic and the rational personal injury lawyer Joe Miller in Philadelphia, Washington has also established himself as an action star with the Equalizer movies and CIA operative-turned-personal bodyguard John W. Creasy in Man on Fire. In fact, Man on Fire ranks among the action-thrillers like The Equalizer. The sequel also marks Washington’s fifth collaboration with Fuqua, having previously appeared in the first two Equalizer movies. He also starred in Fuqua’s Training Day as corrupt cop Alonzo Harris and in the Magnificent Seven remake as sharpshooting ex-U.S. Marshal Sam Chisolm.

Dakota Fanning As Unknown

Dakota Fanning looking sideways in The Equalizer 3

The story of The Equalizer 3 that is known so far doesn’t reveal many character origins for anyone other than Robert McCall. While Dakota Fanning is revealed in the Equalizer 3 trailer as a possible ally interacting with McCall, her unnamed character remains vague at the moment. Fanning’s involvement in the cast of The Equalizer 3 marks a reunion with Denzel Washington. Breaking out as a child actor, Fanning played the nine-year-old Pita in Man on Fire alongside Washington, who played a revenge-seeking bodyguard tasked with protecting her character. Fanning opened up about working with Washington again after nearly two decades, calling it a “dream come true.”

Fanning’s initial claim to fame was her moving performance as the titular protagonist’s daughter Lucy Dawson in I Am Sam, which earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination at the mere age of seven. Fanning’s other popular roles as a child actor included Tom Cruise’s on-screen daughter Rachel Ferrier in War of the Worlds, the animal-loving protagonist Fern Arable in Charlotte’s Web, and the inquisitive nine-year-old Caroline Jones in Caroline. She went on to play Manson family member Squeaky Fromme in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, flamboyant celebrity Penelope Stern in Ocean’s 8, and the valiant private detective Sara Howard in the period drama series The Alienist.

David Denman As Unknown

David Denman looking sideways in 13 Hours

David Denman joined the Equalizer 3 cast in an undisclosed role even though he’s slated to play one of the main characters. The Equalizer 3 marks his second collaboration with Antoine Fuqua, as he earlier appeared in the director’s period action drama Emancipation in the role of the real-life Union Army General William Dwight. Denman’s previous action movie work also includes the war thriller 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, in which he played former U.S. Marine Scout Sniper Dave “Boon” Benton. Denman is also known among fans of The Office as Roy Anderson, the disgruntled ex-fiancé of main character Pam Beesly.

Andrea Scarduzio As Unnamed Villain

Andrea Scarduzio firing a gun in The Equalizer 3

Andrea Scarduzio follows in the footsteps of Marton Csokas and Pedro Pascal as the franchise’s newest villain. His character is a Mafioso who incites McCall to seek vengeance. With the trailer describing his unnamed antagonist as McCall’s “equal,” the Italian actor’s character is a ruthless crime lord who will stop at nothing to continue his reign of terror. In addition to being cast in The Equalizer 3, Scarduzio will appear in a role credited as “Word Traveler” in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. He previously played a yacht salesman in The Crown and the artist and Picasso admirer Rozsda in Genius season 2.

Sonia Ben Ammar As Chiara

Sonia Ben Ammar looking upwards in The Equalizer 3

Tunisian actress, model, and singer Sonia Ben Ammar appears in the cast of The Equalizer 3 as Chaira, a friendly local whose family is threatened by the Mafia. She, along with her husband and daughter, makes McCall feel welcome in Italy, but their eventual troubles prompt him to become their protector. Ammar has appeared on the covers of several magazines like Vanity Fair and helmed the acclaimed extended play Sonia. As an actress, Ammar earned popularity with the 2022 slasher Scream, in which she played Liv McKenzie, a teenager who lives in the fictional town of Woodsboro and has been haunted by a recent murder spree.

The Equalizer 3 Supporting Cast & Characters

Remo Girone as Unknown – The Equalizer 3 cast also includes Italian film and stage artist Remo Girone. His character offers advice to Robert McCall and tells him how notorious the Mafia can be. Girone is otherwise best known for playing racer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari in Ford vs. Ferrari and Italian-American mob boss Maso Pescatore in Live By Night.

Eugenio Mastrandrea as Unknown – Another actor representing Italy in the Equalizer 3 cast is Eugenio Mastrandrea, who is best known for starring alongside Zoe Saldaña in the Netflix romantic drama series From Scratch. He played Lino, a Sicilian chef who embarks on a passionate yet tragic romance with aspiring artist Amy as he tries to battle terminal cancer.

Gaia Scodellaro as Unknown – One of McCall’s close friends in Sicily is the character played by Gaia Scodellaro. The Italian actress is known for playing a nun named Sister Celine in the comedy series You, Me and the Apocalypse.

Andrea Dodero as Unknown – Italian actor Andrea Dodero plays one of Scarduzio’s character’s henchmen who attempt to threaten McCall. He previously played the emotionally sensitive drug dealer Mahdi in the crime drama series Blocco 181.

Salvatore Ruocco as Salvatore – On IMDb, Salvatore Ruocco is credited as playing a character that shares the same first name as him. The Italian actor previously played a boxer in the Cannes Grand Prix-winning crime drama Gomorrah and a politician in Pasolini, the biopic of Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Bruno Bilotta as Farmer – The Equalizer 3 cast includes Bruno Bilotta as a farmer. Bilotta’s 2023 included another run-in with the Mafia as he also joined the cast of Mafia Mamma as a pallbearer. Bilotta’s filmography includes The Tourist in which he played a Sniper Chief named Giordani and Spider-Man: Far From Home where he played a mob boss.

Giampiero Rotoli as Young Lieutenant – Giampiero Rotoli is credited as a Lieutenant in the cast of The Equalizer 3. The actor previously played a wartime aviator in the series Catch-22 and a pilgrim in the spiritual drama The Young Messiah.

Grammy winner Erykah Badu has joined the all-star ensemble for Netflix’s feature adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson.”

The singer-songwriter (“What Men Want”) will make a cameo, delivering “her soulful sound and eclectic style” with musical performances in the film,” starring Oscar winner Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington.

Jackson and Washington reprise their roles from the highly successful Broadway revival of Wilson’s play, which recently received two Tony Award nominations (best revival of a play and best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play for Jackson).

Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, “The Piano Lesson” follows the lives of the Charles family, a household led by Doaker Charles (Jackson), and an heirloom, the family piano, which is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. Washington plays Boy Willie, Doaker’s nephew, a role Jackson originated in the 1987 production.

The Netflix adaptation is directed by Malcolm Washington from a screenplay he adapted with Virgil Williams. The film also stars Ray Fisher (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Rebel Moon”), Danielle Deadwyler (“Till,” “The Harder They Fall”), Michael Potts (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Rustin”) and Corey Hawkins (“Straight Outta Compton,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth”).

Fisher and Potts appeared alongside Jackson and Washington in the stage production, which was directed by LaTanya Richardson Jackson. After 27 previews and 124 regular performances at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, “The Piano Lesson” was the highest-grossing revival of a play on Broadway and the highest grossing Wilson production on Broadway.

Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” is produced by Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and Academy Award nominee Todd Black. Executive producers are Constanza Romero, Jennifer Roth and Katia Washington.

The play is part of Wilson’s 10-title “American Century Cycle,” that includes “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” both of which were adapted for the screen by Denzel Washington and Black.

EXCLUSIVEWill Ferrell is in huddling to star as the NFL’s John Madden in Madden, a theatrical feature to be directed for Amazon/MGM by five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell (American Hustle), multiple sources tell Deadline.

Amazon had no comment.

The project has been percolating for some time. It is based on a Black List script by Cambron Clark, and Russell had been doing a rewrite when everything stopped with the writer’s strike.

A Prime Video Sports Original, Madden tells the story of one of the larger-than-life personalities to grace an NFL sideline. All Madden ever wanted was to be a head coach and he was one of the best ever. After winning the Super Bowl, the stress of the job began to destroy him. It forced him away from his dream job, and the film focuses on his friendship with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, and how Madden found a second act that made him far more famous. He continued his passion for teaching X’s and O’s in different ways. He redefined the notion of the football broadcaster with an outsized personality that led to a big endorsement career for Lite Beer from Miller, Tinactin and other products. Although he’d never played a video game in his life, Madden helped changed the videogame landscape when he became the figurehead for Madden NFL, a perennial top seller that this fall gets its 24th incarnation through Electronic Arts.

Madden is produced by Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jonathan Shukat, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Latter is the co-owner of the New York Giants, and the expectation is that the NFL will embrace the feature film on one of the sport’s most beloved figures.

Ferrell has most recently been seen in two high-profile projects from Apple TV+: the popular holiday musical comedy Spirited and the miniseries The Shrink Next Door. He plays a Mattel CEO in the Greta Gerwig-directed Warner Bros pic Barbie, out July 21st, and voices the Border Terrier Reggie in Universal’s R-rated comedy Strays, due August 18th. Among other upcoming projects for the multi-hyphenate — who has recently produced Searchlight’s Sundance acquisition Theater Camp and the Cannes-premiering romantic drama May December, just swooped up by Netflix in a rare North America-only deal — is the Prime Video comedy You’re Cordially Invited, which will have him sharing the screen with Reese Witherspoon.

Russell is coming off Amsterdam and Joy, and prior to that wrote and directed American Hustle, which scored 10 Oscar nominations, and Silver Linings Playbook, which brought Jennifer Lawrence her first win. Also coming up for the filmmaker is Super Toys, starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Keke Palmer, which he will direct from his own script.

Ferrell is repped by UTA, Mosaic and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Russell by CAA and Gang, Tyre, Ramer; and Clark by CAA and Epicenter.

Plus: Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones, Jennifer Lawrence gets raunchy, and Wes Anderson meets aliens

By Odie Henderson Globe Staff, Updated May 19, 2023

Though summer hasn’t officially started, this month has already produced a couple of summer movie hits: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3″ unofficially launched the season May 5, while the just-released “Fast X” is off to a running start.

Action star Vin Diesel’s latest ode to “fammmm’ly” is one of a number of sequels you can choose from between now and Labor Day. This summer brings, among other things, return appearances by sharks, Transformers, the unlucky couple from the “Insidious” horror series, Spider-Man, a CGI-altered Indiana Jones, and Denzel Washington’s super-violent Equalizer.

Not psyched about these sequels? Maybe a comedy will get you into the theater. Try a raunchy one, “No Hard Feelings,” featuring Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence taking a job to deflower a 19-year-old, soon-to-be college student. Or check out Robert De Niro in “About My Father,” meeting potential in-laws and embarrassing his onscreen adult son with his usual tough-guy act. If you miss Julia Louis-Dreyfus, you’ll find her in a new cringe comedy, “You Hurt My Feelings,” about the consequences of lying to one’s spouse.

Want a scary literary adaptation instead? Well, you’ve got new films based on works by Stephen King and Bram Stoker.

Disney fans, rejoice: There’s also a new Pixar film, “Elemental,” as well as a remake of “The Little Mermaid” featuring fresh songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

You know I’m a betting man, so I’m placing all my money on what I think will be the biggest movie of the summer: Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Granted, we know very little about the plot, but Margot Robbie appears to be perfectly cast as Barbie. And how can one resist Ryan Gosling saying “hey girl, I’m Ken” with his eyes? You’ll have to wait until July 21 to see it. If it makes enough money, Hollywood might make my dream summer blockbuster, “Barbie vs. M3GAN.”

I reviewed the somewhat unsatisfying “Fast X,” which continues the franchise’s fusion of car chases and soap opera. I’ve also seen “The Little Mermaid,” “You Hurt My Feelings,” and the documentary “Being Mary Tyler Moore.”

Here’s what else is in store on screens large and small. Some dates are subject to change.

THE EQUALIZER 3 opens September 1st

Decades into his stellar career, two-time Academy Award® winner Denzel Washington would prove that he, very much, still had what it takes to be an action hero as the star of THE EQUALIZER. The 2014 adaptation of a hit, Emmy-nominated ‘80s TV show of the same name – which followed a retired spy using his special skills to help those in need as a private investigator – would spawn a sequel in 2018 that saw the mysterious Robert McCall continuing his war against injustice. He is coming back in 2023 for one last fight in THE EQUALIZER 3.

Currently set to be released in AMC Theatres this September, the final installment to director Antoine Fuqua’s trilogy promises to be, as one would hope, the biggest and most exciting entry of all. Not only does the story take Washington’s protagonist to an international setting, but it also marks a reunion between him and his MAN ON FIRE co-star, Dakota Fanning. Learn all about that and what other reasons fans have to look forward to THE EQUALIZER 3 in our guide below.

Denzel Washington Returns

The character of Robert McCall was initially portrayed on the original “Equalizer” TV show by Edward Woodward and later reimagined as “Robyn McCall” on CBS’ modern reboot led by Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah. However, it is hard to imagine anyone else playing the old fashioned vigilante than Denzel Washington. Thankfully, the celebrated actor is reprising the role in the upcoming sequel.

Joining Washington in the EQUALIZER 3 cast, as Variety previously reported, are David Denman – who is best known for playing Roy on NBC’s American version of “The Office” – Sonia Ben Ammar from 2022’s SCREAM, and Italian acting veteran Reno Girone, who played Enzo Ferrari in director James Mangold’s Oscar®-winning biographical drama, FORD V FERRARI, in 2019. As previously mentioned, Washington is also reuniting with his MAN ON FIRE co-star, Dakota Fanning, in this film for the first time since that Tony Scott-helmed thriller was released in 2004.

Robert McCall Is Brought Back Into Action

The first movie saw McCall living in Boston, struggling to put his violent past as a special service commando behind him until his saving of a teen sex worker (Chloë Grace Moretz) put him at odds with Russian mobsters. In THE EQUALIZER 2, he continued his crusade to help those in need while still living in Boston as a rideshare driver. In this new chapter, McCall finds a new place to call home: Southern Italy.

The story of THE EQUALIZER 3 sees McCall believe he has finally found the solace he has been looking for in his new overseas residence. However, he soon finds that old habits die hard when he discovers that the locals who have brought him happiness have fallen prey to Italy’s criminal underworld. The hero comes out of retirement once more to protect his new friends by dishing out his old school brand of merciless justice.

Antoine Fuqua Directs

Robert McCall’s story was first brought to the big screen in THE EQUALIZER by director Antoine Fuqua, who would also return to helm the sequel four years later. The accomplished filmmaker is returning to complete the trilogy with THE EQUALIZER 3, on which he also serves as a producer alongside the movie’s star.

In fact, the sequel also marks Denzel Washington’ fifth time working with Fuqua, who directed the actor in an Oscar-winning performance (his second after 1989’s GLORY) for Best Actor in their first collaboration, TRAINING DAY, in 2001. They would first reunite on the first EQUALIZER movie, re-team on another remake – 2016’s THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, which also starred TRAINING DAY’s Ethan Hawke – and then, two years later, continued Robert McCall’s legacy with THE EQUALIZER 2. That brings us where we are today.

Watch The Trailer

Fans who have been eagerly awaiting Robert McCall’s return in the five years since the franchise’s last entry will certainly not be disappointed by the first official trailer for THE EQUALIZER 3. Not only does it show Washington’s hero at his most fearsome yet, but also shows his softer side and promises that this installment may be the most picturesque from its gorgeous depiction of Southern Italy. See for yourself by watching the teaser below:

It was certainly an inspired choice to play upbeat Italian pop songs like “Volare” for a dazzling juxtaposition to McCall’s brutal treatment of his new enemies, who certainly appear ruthless, but are no match for their unexpected threat. The trailer also provides a sneak peek at Washington’s reunion with Fanning, but without much further insight into what her role will be or how she is connected to McCall.

It looks like, in addition to Fanning’s character, there are plenty more interesting details to be revealed in THE EQUALIZER 3. Be sure to check it out when it arrives at an AMC Theatres location near you!
